The leader of our homeschool group is holding a Halloween party at her house next week. I’m supposed to bring something to share, so it’s got me searching the internet looking for ideas. Halloween is all about the treats and making fun and simple Halloween treats at home your kids will love is easier than you might think.
Do you have some Halloween Cookie Cutters? You can always make some fun and memorable Halloween cookies. But what if you took it a step further and made some other simple Halloween treats?
Terrifying Tortilla Chips: Cut fun shapes out of flour tortillas with a bat, ghost, pumpkin, or other Halloween cookie cutter. Spray the cut-out shapes with a bit of canola oil. Sprinkle parmesan cheese or cinnamon and sugar on them. Put the shapes into the oven for a crispy treat. I suggest about 350° for a few minutes. Just watch it for your preferred doneness.
Spooky Sandwiches: With larger cookie cutters most basic sandwiches will work great. With smaller cookie cutters I would suggest something fairly simple such as peanut butter and jelly or grilled cheese spooky sandwiches. Then, using a cookie cutter, press hard into the sandwich and you’ll get a spooky treat. If you use a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter, you can add licorice or candy corn to make eyes and nose for a jack-o-lantern face.
Creepy Cheese and Cold Cuts: Buy your favorite packaged cheese slices (the kind that you peel the plastic off). Also, buy some sandwich meat such as ham, turkey, and/or bologna. {Anybody remember the old Oscar Mayer commercials? I totally sing the song every time I need to spell bologna. “My bologna has a first name…Ha.} Anyway, using a cookie-cutter, you can make spooky and fun shapes. Present the cheese and cold cuts on a platter as an appetizer – or have a sandwich smorgasbord and allow your guests to use the creepy cheese to make their own sandwiches.
Here are a few more ideas for Halloween fun that don’t use cookie cutters.
Wicked Witch Fingers: Do you have some dough and almonds? You can make witch fingers! Just stretch out the dough into a “finger-shaped” including a knuckle. Then, take the almond and press it into the end to make the fingernail. You can experiment with different colors to make witch fingers creepier. “Paint” the fingernail with food coloring (grey or black is perfect), or make the dough a creepy green color. Oooh…spooky!
Green Anything: Take your favorite foods and add a drop of green food coloring to them. Are you in the mood for French toast? Make it green. How about pudding? Make it green. You can even serve green milk with your cookies. You’ll be the coolest mom on the block.
I’m still not sure what I’ll make, and to be honest, I’ll probably wait until the last minute and go with cornbread muffins, but there are some great ideas out there for those of you who like to plan ahead.
